Blizzard finally revealed that World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Classic is launching on June 1, but it's not all good news for the community. Alongside the release announcement, Blizzard also revealed the price of its deluxe edition and new account services like a one-time character level boost, and a lot of players are upset over how steep those prices are.
Following complaints from the community of the high price of Blizzard’s Classic World of Warcraft Character Cloning service, the company has announced that they will reduce the cost from $35 to $15.
“This service – providing a player with a second copy of a character in a different game – is new for us. Our original concept of the value of this service was largely based on how we price other optional items and services. We want players who choose Classic Era realms to feel as though their choice comes with the possibility that they’ll be able to build relationships and guilds with other players they can count on.”
Community manager Kaivax continues, “However, over the last week or so, we’ve gotten a very large amount of feedback from the community, and we’ve decided to lower the price”, the official forum post from community manager Kaivax reads. “A lower price will likely still accomplish our goals with the new service while allowing many more players to explore the option of playing characters on both Classic Era and Burning Crusade Classic realms.”
Blizzard’s plan for the roll out of Burning Crusade Classic essentially involves treating World of Warcraft Classic and Burning Crusade Classic as two separate entities. When the Burning Crusade Classic pre-patch launches next week, WoW Classic players have a few different options when it comes to what they do with their characters.
Blizzard have faced similar criticisms for the prices of their in-game services before, including the high cost of character transfers to different realms, and more recently the Dark Portal Pass, another Burning Crusade Classic service, which costs $39.99 and offers a one time character boost to level 58, only usable on Burning Crusade Classic realms.
It's easy to see why players are frustrated. World of Warcraft's account services are infuriatingly overpriced compared to other MMOs. What's more, by forcing players to pay to play the same character on both Burning Crusade and regular WoW Classic servers, it arbitrarily divides the community and creates pressure to follow the majority over to Burning Crusade. Otherwise you risk being left behind in a ghost-town Classic server. "[It's] essentially killing the population for classic vanilla," wrote one Redditor. "Absolutely insane pricing."
So, while the service will still cost money, that price is probably a lot more palatable to folks who want the best of both worlds. Burning Crusade Classic launches on June 1st, while the Burning Crusade pre-patch will drop on May 18th. Cloning services will launch the same day as the pre-patch.
